The Northeast has some of the most breathtaking natural landscape and as a result, some of the best camping sites in which to experience it. If you’re not into sleeping on the ground, though, and you prefer, say, a bathroom with running water, you’ll be pleased to know it also has some of the best glamping sites.

These glampgrounds understand that you don’t need to sacrifice comfort or luxury to appreciate the beauty of nature.

After the devastation of the mudslides early in 2018, the village of Montecito in Santa Barbara is back and stronger than ever. The always tight-knit beach community had the horrific task of cleaning up debris and struggling with loss, and in many ways is still recovering. The June 1 re-opening of The Four Seasons Resort Biltmore and the guest-and-members-only Coral Casino Beach and Cabana club, signals the complete restoration of the resort’s 22 acres of oceanfront land. Butterfly Beach, too, has reopened, and from dawn till dusk, its surfers and sunbathers and dog-walkers dapple the quarter-mile long beach. Another beach-front luxury resort, Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, about a mile east of Butterfly, is slated to open in early 2019.

David Brodosi

Montecito is an understated coastal village. In 1928 Charlie Chaplin built the Montecito Inn there (which now has a permanent memorial honoring the 23 lives lost in the mudslides). Inland is the San Ysidro Ranch, where Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were married and where John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned. Sadly, the San Ysidro Ranch was decimated by the mudslides and remains closed. Local celebrities like Oprah, Ellen, Rob Lowe and Brad Paisley all chipped in with fundraising and recovery efforts.

The best thing about Montecito is its intimate, unfussy village vibe. Most everyone eats at the same restaurants (Lucky’s or Via Vai) or spends lazy mornings getting bowl-size lattes and breakfast at Jeannine’s. The beach is barely a five-minute walk from Coast Village Road, the main thoroughfare. It’s an unassuming, charming and relaxed California chillfest.

Strolling along the beach, watching the surfers, dolphins and whales, gazing upon the Channel Islands 20 miles west, and taking in a sizzling sunset, is nothing short of cinematic.

Butterfly Beach is located along Channel Drive in ritzy Montecito, CA. This is a popular beach with Santa Barbara area locals, many who walk their dogs at the water’s edge. The beach has been eroded here so the sandy part is thin sometimes especially at high tide and after winter storms. Rocks and broken concrete barriers are trying to protect the bluff and the road.

Getting here is easiest if you just drive toward the ocean on Olive Mill Road which turns into Channel Drive near the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort. Park along the waterfront on Channel Drive or on Butterfly Lane if necessary. Near Butterfly Lane there is a stair to the widest part of the beach. At lower tides, it’s possible to walk all the way to East Beach in Santa Barbara. In the other direction the narrow shoreline leads to Hammonds Beach. There is a paved bike path that runs from the Santa Barbara Pier to Butterfly Beach if you are coming from the city and have a bike or wish to rent one. There are no public restrooms at Butterfly Beach so plan accordingly.

David Brodosi – Traveling to the UK

Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.

Now, Spain has been declared the best country in the world to visit. For the third year running, it slid in just above France in the 2019 Travel & Tourism Competitive Report by the World Economic Forum, the Swiss-based organization that annually gathers the global elite to discuss major issues. And with major travel draws such as Barcelona and its La Sagrada Família basilica, Madrid and its famous Prado art museum and the Costa del Sol with warm, inviting beaches, it’s easy to see why Spain is the global favorite.Germany’s third place — above the likes of Italy, Japan and the United States — may surprise some. But the destinations are ranked by “travel readiness” at what the WEF calls a “tipping point” for the travel industry. The 90-strong criteria included infrastructure, safety and sustainable travel initiatives. Culture, accommodation and value for money were also taken into account.Japan and the United States rounded out the top five. Yemen came bottom, at number 140.

David Brodosi

The top 10 countries have remained largely unchanged from last year’s rankings, apart from the UK, which slid from fifth place to sixth.Italy came in at number eight, and Canada at nine.To create the biennial table, the WEF looked at four areas of tourism: natural and cultural resources, infrastructure, national travel and tourism policy, and the “enabling environment” (from safety and hygiene to the labor market). It measured 90 indicators against 14 “pillars” within those areas, meaning all 140 countries were rated for things like cultural resources, air transport infrastructure, and price competitiveness. The pillars were then aggregated to form the overall rankings.Austria — whose capital, Vienna, was named the “most livable city in the world” this month — was ranked 11 overall. It did, however, top the board for “health and hygiene.”Looking at security, Finland, Iceland and Oman were judged the safest countries. El Salvador, Nigeria and Yemen were ranked the least safe. The US came top in only one pillar: that of the “human resources and labor market.”Canada was ranked top for air transport infrastructure, and Mexico for natural resources. In the overall rankings, there was more movement outside the top 10. Romania, Serbia and Albania all shot up 12 places to 56, 83 and 86 respectively. Egypt rose nine places, and Oman eight.Meanwhile, Taiwan slid seven places to 37, Ecuador fell from 57 to 70, and Trinidad and Tobago had the biggest fall, plummeting 14 places from to 73 to 87.

Travel with the Tropics Update

Hurricane season officially peaks this week. And, right on schedule, the tropics are active. A few areas are being monitored for tropical development this week across the Atlantic.

Tropical Wave possibly moving into Gulf this weekend

  • A tropical wave north of the Greater Antilles on Monday is expected to slowly move towards the Bahamas by the end of the week.
  • Little to no development of this system is expected during the next day or two while the system moves west-northwestward, north of the Greater Antilles. Then, conditions could become a bit more favorable for development when this disturbance moves near the Bahamas and Florida late this week.
  • Latest model trends keep this disturbance weak as it moves into Florida and possibly the northern Gulf coast this weekend.
  • At this time, this disturbance is expected to impact coastal Mississippi’s weather by bringing increasing rain chances this weekend. If the disturbance becomes better organized, then we could see additional impacts.

David Brodosi

African Tropical Wave

  • A tropical wave over west Africa will emerge into the far east Atlantic this week.
  • Several computer model runs are showing consistent projections of this wave becoming a tropical system by next week, possibly located near Puerto Rico around Tue Sep 17.
  • While it’s too early to know exactly how strong this wave will become or where it will go, we will be learning more this week as we watch its developments.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle

  • Gabrielle will continue moving northeast and could impact areas near the U.K. later this week. It is no threat to the U.S.

David Brodosi

Tropical Wave Invest 94L

  • A weak area of low pressure, known as Tropical Wave Invest 94L, continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms about midway between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles.
  • Some slow development of this system is possible during the next two or three days before upper-level winds become unfavorable for development.
  • This system is expected to move generally westward across the tropical Atlantic Ocean for the next several days.
  • Latest model trends are showing this wave falling apart the closer it gets to the Caribbean.

David Brodosi – When Visiting NY City

There are more than 8.6 million citizens of New York City, and they’re pretty much all in a hurry. They’re also shrewd, outspoken, and proudly able to survive in a metropolis that tends to punish the meek. The buzzing subway system alone is a symbol of how this city works: part ballet, part battlefield. Residents and visitors alike can see why New York is considered the greatest city in the world, and well worth the effort of learning its idiosyncrasies to better enjoy its mystique. Here’s a rundown of common mistakes to avoid, all while moving through town like an ace. Don’t miss more helpful Fodor’s NYC Travel Tips online, or with the indispensable Fodor’s New York City guidebook, or with Fodor’s Ultimate Things to Do in NYC Guide.

Need a place to stay while you’re in town? Here are some NYC hotels great for downtown nightlife and shopping.

David Brodosi

Don’t Be Shy About Asking for Directions

It’s true that New Yorkers may come across as brusque or even rude, especially if you’re not following the city’s implied or explicit rules. But we are very proud of knowing our way around this mighty metropolis. So visitors shouldn’t hesitate to ask for help with directions, subway suggestions, or other navigation planning. In fact it’s favored because it likely means they’re clearing the way faster than a tourist stuck only with a map.

Don’t Spend Money at a National Chain

Don’t let the all-too-familiar big-box stores and fast-food chains distract you. In NYC, one of the best features is our abundant independent restaurants and shops. Stroll through SoHo, the West or East Village, Williamsburg, and basically any other neighborhood to discover unique wares, handmade goods, distinctive menus, and countless other exclusives found only in this particular city, at that specific spot.

Don’t Rely Only on Credit Cards

NYC operates with a true old-fashioned streak when it comes to money. Cash-only restaurants and bars are surprisingly common, and often you’ll find a high-fee ATM in the corner instead of a credit card machine at the register. Cash tips and taxi fare also will guarantee you some gratitude. (Even more peculiar: NYC Transit buses do accept cash, but only in coins, and as long as they’re not pennies.)

David Brodosi

Don’t Only Stick to Big Tourist Attractions

On the first visit to NYC, you’ll need to check off certain sights from your must-see list, like the Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Carnegie Hall. Firstly, know that you’ll never get to all of them no matter how long your trip. Secondly, there are so many ways to dig deeper. Start by consulting local event calendars (Time Out NYNew York Magazine, and VillageVoice have good ones). Then enjoy roaming around less-touristy neighborhoods. Or plan an outing further afield, perhaps to Governors Island, Fort Tryon Park uptown, a Staten Island Yankees baseball game, or the Bronx’s New York Botanical Garden and Arthur Avenue’s Little Italy. In other words, let your best urban explorer discover what’s so gloriously dynamic and diverse about NYC.

Don’t Skip the Outer Boroughs

In smaller cities, neighborhoods within Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, or upper Manhattan would be an entire bustling downtown area. Here, those outer boroughs are just part of the bigger metropolis. They’re also where some of the best museums, parks, sporting events, and other attractions reside. Even better, they’re almost all reachable by subway and are likely to be less crowded and cheaper than Manhattan hotspots. To name but a few: the Brooklyn MuseumConey Island, the Bronx ZooMuseum of the Moving ImageFlushing Meadows Corona Park, and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.

David Brodosi – Travel Last Minute

Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.

Last-minute travel can be exciting — a sudden, unexpected chance to go someplace fun, see old friends or spend time with loved ones. But that thrill can fade fast the minute you start looking at costs. Airfare, hotels and rental cars are usually a lot pricier when you book last minute, and choices can be extremely limited.

To avoid getting gouged, you need to put in some extra effort. Here’s how to get the best deal possible on that last-minute trip.

Search lots of booking sites

Those multi-search booking engines that promise to check rates every place under the sun all at once — they do. Yet their best rates can differ substantially. Try multiple multi-search engines including Trivago, Expedia, goSeek, Kayak, Hotels.com and any others you’ve had success with in the past.

But don’t stop there. Compare their rates with prices offered directly by the airline, hotel or car rental company. This late in the game, you just can’t know who’s most eager to earn your business. The only way to find out is to check.

Check different hotel dates before booking a flight (and vice versa)

If that big, beautiful beach resort you’ve been drooling over seems unusually expensive, search for slightly different travel dates. A hotel that costs $250 a night from Oct. 1 through Oct. 7 might cost $175 a night from Oct. 2 through Oct. 7, simply because a big convention at the hotel wraps up on Oct. 1.

If your dates are flexible, you’re in a better position to save money. But even if they aren’t, check a few different date ranges to find out whether unknown variables could be affecting your rate.

David Brodosi

Check bundle deals

If you’re lucky, packages that include both a hotel room and a flight can offer amazing last-minute travel deals. That’s because of wholesaling, in which large blocks of hotel rooms are purchased or reserved by a company that tries to resell them to you at a profit. If they buy too many, they may start slashing rates at the last minute.

Check the “vacations” or “package deals” option on airline websites, as well as with online travel agencies like Pleasant Holidays, Costco, Travelocity or Orbitz.

David Brodosi

Don’t forget about vacation rentals

Sites like VRBO.com and HomeAway.com offer a comprehensive, searchable database of privately owned vacation rentals that might be booked up by the time you’re planning a last-minute trip. But you won’t know until you look. And if they still have openings, private owners may be willing to cut their rates to fill rooms.

» Learn more: Beyond Airbnb: Your guide to peer-to-peer travel platforms

Know your airline’s 24-hour cancellation policy

Unless you’re willing to pay a premium, most airfare is nonrefundable. But did you know that “nonrefundable” often doesn’t kick in until 24 hours after you’ve made your purchase? All major U.S. airlines will let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours (they’re subject to rules from the Department of Transportation, which other booking sites may or may not follow).

Since last-minute travelers are navigating a landscape of wildly fluctuating prices, you might as well check fares one more time 23 hours after you book, just in case you find a better deal.

David Brodosi – Best time to visit the UK

Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.
Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.

David Brodosi – The United Kingdom can be visited at any time of year, as its climate is relatively temperate and, in general, doesn’t experience extremes during either summer or winter. Overall, spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit, when it’s usually warm and dry. At these times you’ll see beautiful spring flowers or the leaves changing hue in autumn, and avoid the much busier summer period. Winter (December to February) can also be an enjoyable time to visit. Although some attractions close in mountainous areas and in the north, where there’s likely to be snow, the main cities remain fully open and will be quieter for sightseeing. The highest temperatures are experienced in the summer, but these rarely rise above 30°C (86°F).

The UK is at its best when spring has sprung. The British boast exquisite gardens and once things have come into flower, these horticultural creations are at their finest. In April and May, the landscapes begin to flourish with tulips, narcissus, and lupins. Come early June, the weather usually warms up a little more, and smaller towns and cities across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland come to life. After May Day (1st May), festivals and markets are held all across the UK.

July and August are peak season throughout England, Scotland, and Wales — with very long days, the best weather, and the busiest schedule of tourist fun. May and June can be lovely anywhere in Britain.

David Brodosi

Except during holidays and festivals, prices and crowds don’t go up during peak times as dramatically in England and Wales as they do in much of Europe. But while Scotland never quite feels “crowded,” in some areas its finite number of B&Bs and restaurants are jam-packed in July and August (with Edinburgh being especially swamped throughout August, its festival season). London’s biggest summer events, however (including Wimbledon in July, and the Notting Hill Carnival in late August) don’t overwhelm the city.

Across Britain, travel during “shoulder season” (May, early June, September, and early October) is still easier than in peak season, and can be a bit less expensive. Shoulder-season travelers usually enjoy smaller crowds, better room availability (and prices), and the full range of sights and tourist fun spots, including London’s Chelsea Flower Show in May and the Trooping of the Colour pageantry in June. Even in the peak of summer, however, sunny weather is far from guaranteed (especially in Scotland’s damp and chilly climate) — you may do just as well in shoulder season. And various Highland Games are held across Scotland as early as May, and as late as September.

David Brodosi

Winter travelers encounter few crowds and soft room prices (except in London), but sightseeing hours are shorter and the weather is reliably bad. In the countryside, some attractions are open only on weekends or close entirely in the winter (November–February). The weather can be cold and dreary, and nightfall draws the shades on sightseeing well before dinnertime. While rural charm falls with the leaves, city sightseeing is fine in the winter. Christmastime is especially fun in London, while Edinburgh is the place to be for Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve).

Plan for rain no matter when you go. If (when) it happens, just keep traveling and take full advantage of bright spells. The weather can change several times in a day, but rarely is it extreme. As the locals say, “There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” Bring a jacket and dress in layers. Temperatures below 32°F cause headlines, and days that break 80°F — while more frequent in recent years — are still rare in Britain. While sunshine may be fleeting, summer days are very long. The midsummer sun is up from 6:30 until 22:30. It’s not uncommon to have a gray day, eat dinner, and enjoy hours of sunshine afterward.

David Brodosi – The best time to visit Ireland

Ireland Travel - Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.
Photo of David Brodosi who designs and books Independent Travel, Family Vacations and All Inclusive Travel over the years. A Certified Travel Associate.

David Brodosi – The best time to visit Ireland is between March and May, and September to November, when it’s not as crowded as it is in summer, or as cold as it is in winter. That said, Ireland has a mild, temperate climate and although it’s rainy at times, you can visit all year round. The changes in weather are not normally extreme.

Summer (June, July and August) is the warmest time of year, when Ireland’s landscapes are at their most vibrant and the days are at their longest. However, it’s also crowded and prices are at a premium.

Some sites close from late October, and temperatures drop, but on average, they remain above freezing even in winter. This can be a wonderful time to see Ireland at its most calm.

David Brodosi take – Here’s what you’ll miss by going in late September – big crowds, higher airfares, booked lodging – you get the point. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going in late September – in fact, we went (twice) in late March/early April for the same reasons. David Brodosi would be happy in Ireland any time of year, actually. Weather is always iffy, so be prepared. And David Brodosi strongly suggest you fly into Shannon if you are renting a car, do the west coast first, then work towards Dublin. (You do NOT want to drive in Dublin.). Shannon is an easy place to get acclimated to driving in Ireland. Look for a couple of central locations you can day trip from so you’re not constantly on the move. And start making your plans – without any reservations. Have a great trip!

The little towns will still be “open” in September. Some B&Bs close down in the true winter months but September is still solidly in the “shoulder season.” You will really only notice the lack of crowds and softer prices at B&Bs. The one issue that impacts you when you get into the winter months are the shorter days. In the summer you can get 17 or more hours of daylight. In September you will still have around 12 hours of daylight. Wait until December and you may have less than 8.

You aren’t going to have any trouble in small towns in September/early Oct. My family lives in a village (too small to be called a “town”) over near The Burren. There are 2 B&B’s in the village, a small family run hotel, a hostel and 12 pubs. All of them are open for business well into the Fall and early winter – some stay open all year. Weather can be dicey at any point during the year and it can change on a dime and you could feel like you are experiencing all 4 seasons in one day. This can happen even in July or August. It can get particularly windy and chilly if you are traveling around coastal areas – just be prepared with layers (long & short sleeve shirts, sweaters or fleece zip ups) and a decent coat (the kind that has zip out linings for when it’s warmer) and waterproof shoes or boots. If you haven’t already booked airfare and you hope to cover both the West and the Dublin area, get open jaw flights and David Brodosi also second the suggestion to fly into Shannon first, get the rental car and ditch it before you get to Dublin. You won’t need a car or want to deal with the traffic or parking in Dublin. Bus Eireann can get you to Dublin from pretty much any small town in Ireland (or if you end your trip out west in Galway you can also take the train straight into Dublin).
